about my name
The Sputnik program was a series of unmanned space missions launched by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s to demonstrate the viability of artificial satellites. The name "Sputnik" ("Спутник") comes from Russian, where it means "fellow traveller".
Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, was launched on October 4, 1957.
Sputnik 2 was launched on November 3, 1957 and carried the first living passenger, a dog named Laika. The mission planners did not provide for the safe return of the spacecraft or its passenger, making Laika the first space casualty.
The first attempt to launch Sputnik 3, on February 3, 1958, failed, but the second on May 15 succeeded, and it carried a large array of instruments for geophysical research. Its tape recorder failed, however, making it unable to measure the Van Allen radiation belts.
Sputnik 4 was launched two years later, on May 15, 1960.
Sputnik 5 was launched on August 19, 1960 with the dogs Belka and Strelka, 40 mice, 2 rats and a variety of plants on board. The spacecraft returned to earth the next day and all animals were recovered safely.

04.23.2006 - I'm adopted today by a nice family and my new mommy and daddy brought a bunch of cool things for me. Oh and they also named me Sputnik! How cool is that?!
04.24.2006 - I went potty outside for the first time.
04.25.2006 - The vet came and gave me my first shots. He was scary and mean, I don't think I like him.
04.26.2006 - I stopped crying so much and mustered up enough courage to jump off the sofa all by myself.
04.27.2006 - I'm 2 months old today, weigh 3.2 lbs and barked for the first time! I also played chase with Kahlua, shes fast! I like Kahlua, shes my new best friend.
04.28.2006 - Cool, I got a new baby blue collar today from Dog Bar!
04.29.2006 - I learned how to lift up my left ear but my right one is still droopy. Daddy makes fun of me and calls me droopy ears. They took us today too to this big giant place where Mommy and Daddy ordered me a Coach collar as my Chirstmas gift in eight months. Yay! |
