We spent two hours in the Big Easy yesterday. Some things have changed,
some things haven't. A year after Katrina, there are still signs
everywhere of the disaster - most suburbs in NO are empty, abandoned
houses, closed businesses.
Downtown was busy with people walking around but most businesses were
closed. The refurbished Superdome is looking like its former self and
not the symbol of despair of Hurricane Katrina.
Going in Uptown, where Tulane University is located, things get better.
Tulane is near 100% repaired. The old student center is being replaced
with a new modern glass structure and there is a new modern dorm.
In the French Quarter, nearly all businesses were closed, even Emeril's
NOLA. Those that were open are open only on certain times and days.
Finally before we left New Orleans, we wanted to fill up but could
hardly find an open gas station. We drove around for an hour and
finally found a packed Chevron.
A year after Katrina and NO has made little progress in its recovery
efforts. Its really sad.
