I went to the Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Grove on November 18th with my daughter after receiving an e-mail invite the night before. We arrived fairly late -- the event was to start at 7:00 pm and we arrived around 6:00 p.m. and the Grove parking was full -- traffic everywhere. We finally went around to the Farmers Market lot and was able to find parking there. Once inside, we walked down the road toward the Grove only to find the main road barricaded off. Nobody was allowed through. We asked the guard how to get to the event and she directed us around the block on the outside perimeter of the mall to the Nordstrom's entrance. There was a huge number of people toddling off in that direction and my impatient daughter was weaving in and out of the crowd and I was huffing and puffing behind her. After finally getting to the other side, we found we were in a quagmire of people packed in like sardines straining to see a television screen of the event. The stage was not visible from where we stood and the sound system was non-existent. You could not hear a thing. In fact, the ambulatory music that they play on a normal business day is louder than this. After being herded around, squished together like sardines only to see a silent tv screen, we decided to leave. We made our way back toward Nordstrom's only to find they had locked the doors and were not allowing anybody in or out. So we walked around toward another exit only to find it too was barricaded. There a ton of people still trying in vain to get in when one man urged the crowd to let us through so we could leave. Eventually, they allowed us to squeeze our way out. This was the most unorganized event I have ever been to and will not attend again. I will be more than happy to watch it from my living room sofa on December 15th and turn the sound up as loud as I want.
